Learn how the latest SGIP changes could benefit you

The Self-Generation Incentive Program (SGIP) is California’s first renewables incentive, created as a peak-load reduction program in 2001. The program’s goal is to reduce GHG emissions through lower electricity demand and purchases. In response to the rampant wildfires that have added huge uncertainty to California’s power grid, the SGIP went through enormous changes in 2020 to focus more on energy storage and providing vulnerable residents with a better energy solution.

These changes make it one of the best incentives in the country for homeowners interested in adding a solar battery backup to their home in Granada Hills, CA. Read our latest blog to learn about the most recent changes that the program has gone through.

Easier to Apply

The most recent update is aimed at making the process for applying to get a home battery rebate easier for residential homeowners. In the past, all of the funds became available on a single day. They were quickly taken by industrial energy storage projects, preventing residential homeowners from using it for their personal solar batteries. The new change marks 75% of the program's funds for energy storage, 15% of which will be saved for homeowners adding batteries with their solar panels. Instead of the funds being released on a single day, they will be available throughout the year, allowing installers to tell their clients exactly how much of the rebate is available before committing to an installation.

Higher Incentives

PG&E, SCE, SCG, or SDG&E customers are eligible for incentives as high as $250 kWh, to cover some of your battery costs. You can also combine your incentive with the 26 percent federal investment tax credit to get even further savings. The value of the kWh savings depends on the size of the battery you purchase and will go down as more batteries are installed, so you will save more the earlier that you install.

But be careful, that 26% ITC is stepping down to 22% in 2021. Waiting to install a roof top solar array with battery backup could cost you thousands of dollars in lost tax credits. When it gets hot in the summer, utility needs rise to combat the California heat with air conditioning. This puts further strain on the grid and increases the chance of a utility-managed power outage.
